Since 1998, he has been living and working as a freelancer in Hamburg and Vienna for clients such as Akakiko, Atomic, HEWI, hma Architekten, Joop, Kneissl, Niessing, Orlando di Castello, \u00d6BB, OMV, Sika, twib, Verlag Hermann Schmidt, and ZIV. <br\/><br\/>In his independent work, he develops photography projects and installations such as <a href=\"https:\/\/ifdesign.com\/de\/winner-ranking\/project\/japanese-rooms\/41351\">\u201cJapanese Rooms\u201d<\/a> in Berlin, New York, Shanghai, Tokyo, and Vienna, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.p-inc.ch\/USM-Showrooms\">\u201cWelle\u201d for USM<\/a> in Hamburg and Berlin.<br\/><br\/>In June 2023, he published his <a href=\"https:\/\/birkhauser.com\/de\/books\/9783035626025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">book<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/birkhauser.com\/en\/book\/9783035629668\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">*Teaching Graphic Design*<\/a>, which was released in April 2025 as <a href=\"https:\/\/birkhauser.com\/en\/book\/9783035629668\">a second edition in English<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/birkhauser.com\/de\/book\/9783035629651\">a first edition in German<\/a>. For the book, Ingmar Thies drew on his own teaching experiences and interviewed 24 instructors. Among those featured are instructors in graphic design, design theory, game development, industrial design, and behavioral science from China, Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, Austria, and the United States. Among them are LeeAnn Renninger, Rathna Ramanathan, Kashiwa Sato, and Erik Spiekermann\u2014How do I teach design? Why is listening so important?
