About the lecture: “Ad? Tell me a story."

In the USA, you can sense a change in advertising: there is a shift from the dictate of information to storytelling. That, naturally, has serious consequences: people actually like advertisements. There are no barriers between culture and advertising, because advertising is a part of the culture. Unfortunately, this is not the case in the German-speaking world, where people regard advertising rather as a necessary evil. However, this has more to do with advertising itself than with the people. So why does advertising culture thrive in the USA and not in our part of the world? And what has happened to hard sell and information?

 

 

About our guest:

Oliver Handlos is Creative Director of BBDO New York, which is the world’s best agency according to the 2011 Big Won Report. He started his career as a copywriter for McCann Erickson in 1997, before moving on to Scholz & Friends, Berlin. Later, Oliver Handlos worked as Creative Director for Philipp & Keuntje and Jung von Matt. After that, from 2007 on, he was Group Creative Director at Scholz & Friends in Berlin. Since 2010, he is Creative Director at BBDO New York. He develops campaigns for ATT, HBO, Monster, Gillette, BMW, Audi, Saturn, Ebay, Mercedes-Benz, DHL, Deutsche Bank, Coca Cola, Loewe, Fisherman’s Friend and the Frankfurter Allgemeine.

Oliver Handlos is a member of the Art Directors Club, Germany, as well as D&AD London. His work has won numerous national and international awards, including ten Lions in Cannes. According to the 2009 Big Won Report, Oliver Handlos is the second most awarded creative director in the world.
