In his lecture, Michael Schirner draws particular attention to his art projects: Kisuaheli neumix, Pictures and BYE BYE. Schirner’s creative work revolves around questions that are central to today’s approach to art: what does authorship mean? What is the place where art actually happens? In the artist, the work, or in the beholder? How do elusive, hardly comprehensible perception thresholds that distinguish the visible from the invisible, the imagined from facts, become tangible? What does an image mean today and what does the image of an image mean? In his BYE BYE exhibition shown in 2010 in Hamburg’s Deichtorhallen and a number of other places, Schirner gives the beholder a clear indication of what he means: “My art is not my work. You are the creator of the image in your mind. I don’t exist at all.”

About our guest:

Advertising = art, we could safely say, is a motto established by creative director, communication designer, curator, author and artist Michael Schirner. He has committed himself to erasing the borderline between applied and free art like no other. Schirner believes in the equality of advertising and art, the principle of reduced image and text, rendering the invisible visible, and the self-abolition of the artist as an author and expert. As a result, this influential and successful artist and communication designer has both revolutionised and radicalised advertising and art. He is therefore hailed as “advertising guru” and the “Beuys of advertising”.

Michael Schirner was manager of the GGK Düsseldorf advertising agency before establishing his own project consultancy. He has written advertising history with campaigns created for IBM, Pfanni, Creme 21, Jägermeister, Post, VW, Stern, taz, Die Grünen, and many more.
