Study trip to Tokyo in autumn 2015

Our Klasse’s 11-day study trip to Tokyo took place from 23 October to 2 November 2015.

Our Klasse’s 11-day study trip to Tokyo took place from 23 October to 2 November 2015.

Visits to AQWorks, Dentsu, IIDJ, Party and Wieden + Kennedy design studios and advertising agencies gave valuable insights into the working methods of Tokyo designers. Additionally, our students conducted on-site interviews with Japanese creatives specialising in graphic design, advertising, photography, fashion and art. Results of the study trip are presented in a series of publications describing the life and work of those designers.

In a joint project with Tama Art University Tokyo, Graphic Design study course, students focussed on how Austrian and Japanese societies deal with the topic of “Aging Population”. The aim of the project was to detect and describe problems and to present relevant solutions. While Japanese students investigated Japanese society, Austrian students concentrated on the situation at home. The posters created as a result were then presented and discussed together with Japanese students during the Tokyo study trip. At the same time, a joint exhibition of results was shown on the campus of Tama Art University.

Visits to Tokyo University of the Arts (which is a partner university of University of Applied Arts Vienna), Tokyo Design Week, featuring the PechaKucha event, and to the Austrian Embassy completed our crammed cultural programme.
