About the lecture: “Why are you creative?”

For over a decade now, Hermann Vaske has been asking leading creatives across the world this prosaic question, in order to find out what makes people generate unusual ideas and put them into practice as well.

Vaske’s project “Why Are You Creative” has gathered answers from some of the world’s very best creatives: directors such as Steven Spielberg and Billy Wilder, politicians such as Mikhail Gorbachev and Nelson Mandela, musicians like David Bowie and Bono, visual artists Georg Baselitz and Damien Hirst, authors Salman Rushdie and Günter Grass, fashion designers Vivienne Westwood and Yoji Yamamoto, actors Angelina Jolie and Sean Penn, scientists like Stephen Hawking and Amit Goswami, spiritual teachers Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama, amongst many others.

Vaske presents many different aspects of creativity ranging from artistic to scientific and philosophical forms of creativity. For we are all creative in some way. The difference between so-called “creatives” and other people is that “creatives” put their creative ideas into practice, whilst others merely think or talk about them.
